Period Five
Miss Porter's School
Sarah Porter was born on August 17, 1813, in Farmington, Connecticut. She died February 17, 1900. She was the first woman in Farmington to take action in creating a school for young women. Her goal was to create more opportunities for young women. For a good amount of time, Sarah was the only teacher at the school. As the years progressed, Porter needed more women to educate the students. In this time period, women normally would stay at home and do the cooking and cleaning and the men would work and go to school. Sarah Porter made it possible for women to come together in a school environment to expand upon their knowledge. Porter made the school day very comfortable for her students. Sarah was a very kind woman who did her best to attend her students needs, which she also referred to as her family.
